Yes, finding a job as an international student can be hard. It does require a bit of luck, however there are ways to increase your 'luck' and find the right job.

At first, be realistic. Critically evaluate your skills, experience and knowledge. Write down your previous work experience, list your strengths, interests and think of types of jobs that would not only like but the ones where your experience and skills are likely to help you to get an interview. Contact a recruitment agency and have a chat about your options.

Look at our other article titled: FINDING A STUDENT JOB IN SYDNEY - PROBLEMS AND SUGGESTIONS to get some ideas on how to overcome some of the problems international students face when looking for job in Australia.

There are some statistics saying that 70% of jobs are not advertised. While this number may be a bit exaggerated, the truth is many companies prefer to advertise internally first, to cut cost of advertising and relying on other employees to recommend a good candidate. Ask others!

Based on the results from our poll: How did you find your current job in Australia , the number one way of finding job as a student is 'My Friend Helped me'.

How to find student job in Sydney:

  1. Ask everyone you know - Networking is important. The more people you know, the more people you will meet and so on. Ask others about their work and find out if they are hiring or if / where you can send your resume.

  2. Job search sites - the top 3 job search sites in Australia are: http://www.careerone.com.au/, http://mycareer.com.au/ and http://seek.com.au/. Some of the other include: http://www.casualjobs.com.au/ , http://www.parttimeonline.com.au/, http://www.temping.com.au/, http://www.juniorjobs.com.au/

  3. Newspapers - There is a job section in 'The Sydney Morning Herald' (owns MyCareer.com.au) and 'The Daily Telegraph' (owns CareerOne.com.au). Use the internet to look for job to save time.

  4. Recruitment / Job agencies - those will be able to give you a better idea of the Australian job market and to help you understand what types of jobs you should focus on. A good list of job agencies in Sydney can be found here: http://seek.com.au/profiles/recruiter/

  5. Schools / Universities websites - Check your school's website as some schools do have job advertisement section, for example UTS: http://www.ssu.uts.edu.au/careers/students/jobs/vacancies.html (for UTS students only).

  6. Schools / Universities noticeboards - Always check the noticeboards at your (or other) schools. The employers or agencies advertising there are looking for students and should be aware of your visa / work limitations.

  7. Other websites - other websites to consider include: http://sydney.gumtree.com.au/ , http://sydney.craigslist.com.au/jjj/

  8. Companies Websites - visit websites of companies you would like to work for and look for job advertisements there. If there are no current vacancies and you believe that you are a good candidate, send them an email.

Good luck!
